My Luton Culture hat

A fez hatOne of the things that I most proud and excited to be involved with is Luton Culture. This is the charitable trust that is responsible for running Luton’s museums, libraries and arts activities.

The Luton Cultural Services Trust was created in 2007 when the museum, library and arts services of Luton Borough Council were transferred into an independent charity. The idea was to both protect and enhance these services by giving them greater freedom away from the constraints of being part of the Council and the benefits of charitable status.

As a local elected councillor I was heavily involved in the initial decision to set up this new trust and as a trustee and board member I have been involved in its growth and development ever since. It has been fascinating to be a part of this new organisation as it has found its feet and developed confidence and direction.

Amongst other things Luton Culture is responsible for running Luton’s libraries, Wardown Park Museum, Stockwood Discovery Centre, The Hat Factory, and the Library Theatre. It also plays a major role in organising Luton Carnival and the Luton Summer Festival.
